REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS VIDEO

Reptiles have scaly skins and amphibians soft moist ones. Less well-armoured reptiles like lizards are vulnerable of course to hawks and coyotes and foxes and cats. Water retains its daytime heat better and longer than rock so unlike many other reptiles gharials and other crocodilians have enough energy to feed actively all night. While being nocturnal is unusual among reptiles its the norm for amphibians. Out in the sunshine dry-skinned reptiles have more options. In fact reptiles can conduct as complex and as sensitive a courtship as many a mammal. This is the biggest of all living reptiles and one of the most feared. If one creature were to be labelled a cold-blooded killer it would be this a saltwater crocodile a monster that can grow to a length of 20 feet six metres and weigh a tonne. Crocodiles are among the most ancient of reptiles. The leatherbacks are the only reptiles in the world to have this kind of insulation. Amphibians and reptiles are not easy creatures to film. Pygmy leaf chameleon the smallest chameleon in the world and probably the smallest reptile in the world. Amphibians have evolved a special weapon with which to catch them. Amphibians are the most threatened group of vertebrates on the planet. There are also battles between the sexes. This is the South African dwarf chameleon.

REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS VIDEO Land Invaders Amphibians were the first backboned animals to leave the water and colonise the land. Today there are some 6000 species of them and new ones are constantly being discovered. We may not often see them but during the breeding season we certainly hear them. Choruses like this ensure that we are well aware of frogs and toads. But there are others kinds of amphibians that dont make themselves so obvious. Newts and their close relatives the salamanders.   REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS VIDEO Dragons Of The Dry About 340 million years ago a brand new family of animals was evolving in the primeval swamps. They were to go one step further than the amphibians who had emerged onto dry land before them. For they would eventually completely cut their ties with water. They were the ancestors of todays lizards. They evolved scaly impermeable skins and moved up into the forests. They diversified into a multitude of different shapes and sizes. They developed signalling systems to communicate with one another.
