Quotes and dialoguesSHREK: Once upon a time there was a lovely princess. But she had an enchantment upon her of a fearful sort which could only be broken by love's first kiss. She was locked away in a castle guarded by a terrible fire-breathing dragon. Many brave knigts had attempted to free her from this dreadful prison, but non prevailed. She waited in the dragon's keep in the highest room of the tallest tower for her![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() SHREK: Oh, that's great. Really. DONKEY: Man, it's good to be free. SHREK: Now, why ![]() DONKEY: But, uh, I don't have any friends. And I'm not goin' out there by myself. Hey, wait a minute! I got a great idea! I'll stick with you. You're mean, green, fightin' machine. Together we'll scare the spit out of anybody that crosses us. Oh, wow! That was really scary. If you don't mind me sayin', if that don't work, your breath certainly will get the job done, 'cause you definitely need some Tic Tacs or something, 'cause you breath stinks! You almost burned the hair outta my nose, just like the time. Than I ate some rotten berries. I had strong gases eking out of my butt that day. SHREK: Why are you following me? DONKEY: I'll tell you why. 'Cause I'm all alone, / There's no one here beside me / My promlems have all gone / There's no one to deride me / But you gotta heve friends. SHREK: Stop singing! It's no wonder you don't have any friends. DONKEY: Wow. Only a true friend would be that cruelly honest. SHREK: Listen, little donkey. Take a look at me. What am I? DONKEY: Uh! Really tall? SHREK: No! I'm an ogre! You know. "Grab your torch and pitchforks." Doesn't that bother you? DONKEY: Nope. SHREK: Really? DONKEY: Really, really. SHREK: Oh. DONKEY: Man, I like you. What's you name? SHREK: Uh, Shrek. DONKEY: Shrek? Well, you know what I like about you, Shrek? You got that kind of I-don't-care-what-nobody-thinks-of-me thing. I like that. I respect that, Shrek. You all right. Whoo! Look at that. Who'd want to live in place like that? ProductionRecounting the inspiration of making the film, producer John H. Williams said: "Every development deal starts with a pitch and my pitch came from my then kindergartner, in collaboration with his pre-school brother. Upon our second reading of Shrek, the kindergartner started quoting large segments of the book pretending he could read them. Even as an adult, I thought Shrek was outrageous, irreverent, iconoclastic, gross, and just a lot of fun. "Box officeShrek became the highest-grossing animated film ever to be released in Australia, passing The Lion King (1994) |

TriviaIn many places the film references classic movies, predominantly those by Disney. When Tinker Bell falls on Donkey and he says "I can fly" and people around including the Three Little Pigs say "He can fly, he can fly"; this is a reference to Disney's Peter Pan. This scene is also a reference to the Disney film Dumbo, where Donkey says, while flying, "You might have seen a house fly, maybe even a super fly, but I bet you ain't never seen a Donkey fly".The scene where Fiona is singing to the blue bird is a reference to Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). The transformation scene at the end of the film strongly references to Beauty and the Beast. Donkey and Fiona are the only characters to refer to Shrek by name. The scene where Princess Fiona burps was written after a recording session where Cameron Diaz burped after drinking Coca-Cola. At the 74th Academy Awards, Shrek won the first ever Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, beating Monsters Inc and Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius. The song "I'm a Believer", which has become one of the series' theme songs, was chosen specifically because of the line "I thought love was only true in fairy tales." In 2005, Shrek came sixth in Channel 4's 100 Greatest Cartoons poll behind The Simpsons, Tom and Jerry, South Park, Toy Story and Family Guy. Shrek received his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The effects department actually took mud showers to study how to realistically portray mud in the film. The film was entered into the 2001 Cannes Film Festival, and was the first animated film since Disney's Peter Pan (1953) to receive that honour.
