Mr. J. Thaddeus Toad

Mr. J. Thaddeus Toad

Mr. J. Thaddeus Toad is the main protagonist from The Wind in the Willows, which made up a segment of the 1949 feature film The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. He is voiced by Eric Blore. Mr. Toad is an anthropomorphic common toad who is the village squire, being the wealthy owner and occupant of Toad Hall. Toad is very rich and a bit of a dandy, with a penchant for tweed suits. He owns his own horse, Cyril Proudbottom and a positive mania for fads, he never counted the cost. Toad is intelligent, creative and resourceful, but is aslo narcissistic, self-centred and completely lacking in even the most basic common sense. He is an incurable adventurer, mad, reckless, tried everything. He had a host of fair-weather friends. But there were only three who had his best interests at heart. One is a badger, Angus MacBadger, the second is water Rat and a Mole. His reckless interest in motor cars leads to an deal that is tricked by a villain and the result is a twenty-year prison sentence, but he escapes, dressed as a grandmother, but with the help of his friends regains residence and the place in society. On New Year's Day, Rat, Mole and MacBadger gather to celebrate the new year and also to the newly-reformed Toad. Their jubilance is soon shattered, however, as they see that Toad has once again relapsed, this time into a mania for airplanes.
