Saladin (1137 - 1193) was a Sunni Muslim Kurd who became the first sultan of both Egypt and Syria, founding the Ayyubid dynasty. He led the Muslim military campaign against the Crusader states in the Levant.

The game features four types of resources: food, wood, gold, and stone. Players aim to gather resources, which they use to build towns, create armies, and defeat their enemies.

History facts

The siege of Jerusalem has occurred several times in history, and the duration of each siege varied. Some of the most notable sieges of Jerusalem are:
- The siege by the Romans in 70 CE, which lasted for about five months and ended with the destruction of the Second Temple.
- The siege by the Babylonians in 587 BCE, which lasted for 30 months and ended with the destruction of the First Temple.
- The siege by the Crusaders in 1099, which lasted for about five weeks and ended with the capture of the Holy City from the Muslims.
- The siege by Saladin in 1187, which lasted for about two weeks and ended with the surrender of the city by the Christians.

Do not allow any Jerusalem Monastery or the Dome of the Rock be destroyed. Destroy the 5 towers defending Jerusalem so that Saladin's army can occupy the city.


Cut off Jerusalem's food supply by raiding outlying farms. The two Orders of Knighthood have outlying bases that should be dealt with before assaulting the city. Trebuchets can make short work of towers from a distance.

An expansion for The Age of Kings, The Conquerors, was released in 2000. It introduced numerous new game features, including unique technologies for each civilization, and five new civilizations.
