| By the 1940s, Hollywood's effects specialists had over a decade of studio experience. Hundreds of films were produced during the decade of the 1940s. Orson Welles's masterpiece Citizen Kane were released. The great actor Humphrey Bogart made his most memorable films in this decade: The Maltese Falcon (1941), Casablanca (1942), and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948). The most successful film of the decade was Samuel Goldwyn's "The Best Years of Our Lives (1946)" won nine Academy Awards. Technicolor had been especially challenging but faster film began to make Technicolor a viable option for studio production. However, the high cost of color production in the 1940s meant most films were black and white. The onset of US involvement in World War II also brought a proliferation of films as both patriotism and propaganda. Notable American films from the war years include the anti-Nazi Watch on the Rhine (1943), Shadow of a Doubt (1943), and Yankee Doodle Dandy (1942). 1946 saw RKO Radio releasing Frank Capra's masterpiece "It's a Wonderful Life (1946)". |
