Quotes
Madeleine Elster: Why did you run?
John Ferguson: I'm responsible for you now. The Chinese say that once you've saved a person's life you're responsible for it forever, so I'm committed. I have to know.
Madeleine Elster: There's so little that I know. It's as though I were walking down a long corridor that that once was mirrored. Fragments of that mirror still hang there and when I come to the end of the corridor, there's nothing but darkness. And I know that when I walk into the darkness that I'll die. But I've never come to the end, I've always come back before then. Except once.
John Ferguson: Yesterday? And you didn't know what happened until you found yourself with me. You didn't know where you were. But the fragments of the mirror, you remember those?
Madeleine Elster: Vaguely.
John Ferguson: What do you remember?
Madeleine Elster: There's a room and I sit there alone, always alone.
John Ferguson: What else?
Madeleine Elster: A grave.
John Ferguson: Where?
Madeleine Elster: I don't know. It's an open grave and I... I stand by the gravestone looking down into it. It's my grave.
John Ferguson: How do you know?
Madeleine Elster: I know.
John Ferguson: Is there a name on the gravestone?
Madeleine Elster: No. No, it's new and... clean and waiting.
John Ferguson: What else?
Madeleine Elster: This part is dream, I think. There's a tower and a bell, and a garden below. It seems to be in Spain, a village in Spain. It clicks off and it's gone.
John Ferguson: Well... a portrait? Do you see a portrait?
Madeleine Elster: No.
John Ferguson: If I could just find the key, the beginning, and put it together.
Madeleine Elster: And so explain it away? There is a way to explain it, you see. If I'm mad, then that would explain it, wouldn't it?
John Ferguson: Madeleine!
Madeleine Elster: Oh, Scottie! I'm not mad! I'm not mad! I don't want to die! There's someone within me and she says I must die. Scottie, don't let me go.
John Ferguson: I'm here. I've got you.
Madeleine Elster: I'm so afraid. Don't leave me, stay with me.
John Ferguson: All the time.
John Ferguson: I love you, Madeleine.
Madeleine Elster: I love you too. Too late...
John Ferguson: No, we're together.
Madeleine Elster: It's too late. There's something I must do.
John Ferguson: No, there's nothing you must do. No one possesses you, you're safe with me.
