KATIE MOROSKY: It wasn't funny.
HUBBELL GARDINER: That's not the only reason to laugh. You're a puritan.
The name of the story is "The All-American Smile". And it's by Hubbell Gardiner. In a way, he was like the country he lived in. Everything came too easily to him, but at least he knew it. About once a month he worried that he was a fraud. But then most everyone he knew was more fraudulent. Sometimes he felt he was... there's really no reason for us to change. But of course by then,  they were too lost or too lazy.
It had always been too easy.
KATIE MOROSKY: I'm not attractive in the right way. Am I? I mean I don't have the right style for you. Do I? HUBBELL GARDINER: Good, you can come as Harpo that way you won't be able to talk. KATIE MOROSKY: You're all decadent and disgusting. HUBBELL GARDINER: Come on, we weren't making fun of you. KATIE MOROSKY: Yes you were. You make fun of everything. HUBBELL GARDINER: What didn't you like? KATIE MOROSKY:  The way you write is no problem, no kidding.
Your style is absolutely gorgeous. But you stand back. Do you know what I mean?
HUBBELL GARDINER: Go ahead.
KATIE MOROSKY: You see, the people you watch them from a distance.
KATIE MOROSKY: Why can't I have you? Why? HUBBELL GARDINER: Because you push too hard. There's no time ever to just relax and enjoy living. Everything's too serious to be so serious. KATIE MOROSKY: If I push too hard it's because I want things to be better. I want us to be better, I want you to be better. Sure I make waves, I mean you have to. And I'll keep making them till you're everything you should be and will be. You'll never find anyone as good for you as I am, to believe in you as much as I do or love you as much. HUBBELL GARDINER: I know that. KATIE MOROSKY: Well then, why? HUBBELL GARDINER: Do you think if I come back it's gonna be okay by magic? What's gonna be changed? What's gonna be different? We both will be wrong. We both will lose. KATIE MOROSKY:  Couldn't we both win?
HUBBELL GARDINER: Katie, you expect so much.
KATIE MOROSKY: Oh, but look what I've got.
HUBBELL GARDINER: Come here, sit back.
KATIE MOROSKY: Wouldn't it have be lovely if we were old? We'd have survived all this? Everything would be easy and uncomplicated. Brought it was when we were young.
HUBBELL GARDINER: Katie it was never uncomplicated.
KATIE MOROSKY: But
 it was lovely.
Wasn't it?
HUBBELL GARDINER: Yeah. It was lovely.
