Lyrics with pictures

The moment I saw him smile
I knew he was just my style I knew he was just my style
My only regret is we've never met
Though I dream of him all the while.

But he doesn't know I exist
No matter how I may persist
So it's clear to see there's no hope for me So it's clear to see there's no hope for me
Though I live at fifty-one-thirty-five Kensington Avenue
And he lives at fifty-one-thirty-three.

How can I ignore the boy next door?
I love him more than I can say.
Doesn't try to please me
Doesn't even tease me
And he never sees me glance his way.
And though I'm heart sore the boy next doorAnd though I'm heart sore the boy next door
Affection for me won't display.
I just adore him
So I can't ignore him
The boy next door.
I just adore himI just adore him
So I can't ignore him
The boy next door.

Brief notes

Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane's song has been praised as a perfect example of how to advance story and reveal a character’s emotions efficiently on screen.

Rose (Lucille Bremer), the eldest daughter of Smith family, is expecting a phone call during which she hopes to be proposed to by Warren Sheffield (Robert Sully). She has the following conversation with her younger sister, Esther: You certainly don't want the family in there while a man proposes long-distance. ROSE: Proposes? I don't see why you assume Warren's gonna propose to me. ESTHER: Well, why else do you think he's calling you long-distance? Do you know what it costs? ROSE: I'm not even sure I'll be in. When you get to be my age you'll find out there are more important things in life than boys. After that, Esther Smith (Judy Garland), in love with the boy next door, John Truitt, sing the song.

The song has subsequently become a popular standard, performed by many artists. It is sometimes performed and recorded under the title "The Girl Next Door".
